Every minoxidil question, answered once
People ask the same ten things about this drug, and most of the answers online are written by somebody selling a bottle. Each is written from the labels, the studies those labels quote, and the places where the honest answer is that nobody knows.
The plates, in reading order
They run as a sequence rather than a feed: what the drug is, what happens first, what happens next, what is in the bottle, and what happens if you stop.
Oral vs topical minoxidil, and who gets to decide
Same molecule, two completely different medicines in the eyes of the US regulator. One is a carton you can pick up; the other is a blood-pressure drug with a boxed warning, used for hair off-label.
Plate I · two routesMinoxidil shedding: what the label says, and what it does not
More hair in the sink after starting is the commonest reason people quit in the first month. The carton predicts it, gives it a window, and pointedly does not explain it.
Plate II · the shedHow long minoxidil takes, according to the carton
The manufacturers put their own timings in print, and they are longer than the advertising implies. Here is every interval the US labels commit to, including the one at the end.
Plate III · the waitFoam or liquid: the active ingredient is not the difference
Both cartons carry the same active ingredient line. The choice between them is a choice of carrier, and the carrier is where the stinging, the flammability and the greasiness live.
Plate IV · the carrierIs minoxidil safe? The label answers "for whom"
Safety is not a property of a molecule, it is a relationship between a drug and a person. The carton says who it is not for, and one serious risk belongs to somebody who never touches it.
Plate V · the risksWhat happens when you stop using minoxidil
The label answers this without hedging, and the answer is the reason starting is a bigger decision than it looks. Three to four months, and the regrowth is gone.
Plate VI · stoppingStore brand or Rogaine: the two lines that matter are identical
Put the warehouse-club carton next to the brand-name one and read only the first two lines of each. Same molecule, same strength, same stated purpose. Everything that differs is underneath.
Plate VII · the cartonMinoxidil and sexual side effects: what is on the lists
One of the most searched questions about this drug, and the honest answer is uncomfortable: the labels do not list them, and an absence from a label is not proof of absence in a person.
Plate VIII · what is listedThe itch is usually the carrier, not the drug
Scalp irritation is on every minoxidil stop-use list. The ingredient most often responsible is on the solution panels and absent from the foam ones, and that is a difference you can read yourself.
Plate IX · the itchWhat the number on a minoxidil carton means
The figure on the front is a concentration, not a dose and not a grade. Here is what it describes, why two of them exist, and why this page will not tell you which carton to pick up.
Plate X · the number
